Newton Stewart is the Gateway to the Galloway Hills. The area has a wide variety of hill, forest and coastal walks in unspoilt scenery. The southern upland way is ten miles from the town.
The Galloway Forest Park at Kirroughtree and Glen Trool has many challenging mountain bike routes as well as walks.
For bird watchers there is the RSPB at Wood of Cree and the Wigtown Bay reserve.
Wigtown is Scotland’s booktown and has an annual book festival in September.
Whithorn is the cradle of Christianity in Scotland.
The Gardens of Galloway are famous for their Rhodedendron displays in Springtime and Logan is a subtropical botanic garden.
There are several golf courses within 15 miles of Newton Stewart.
